How to Really Get Rid of Acne Scars

*UPDATE 7/19/16 - See video below to learn how to apply the peel. Viewer Discretion Advised - I have NO makeup on (not for the faint of heart).
As many of you may know, I've struggled with acne since I began having children.  I've shared with you how I banished acne from my face (see A Truly Amazing Acne Treatment).  Now I want to tell you how I got rid of those years and years worth of acne scars.  A glycolic acid skin peel once a week for several months resurfaced my skin into a smoother, nearly scar-free complexion.

I considered many options when researching how to get rid of my scarring.  Other than surgical procedures, a peel was the most viable option for me.  There are many peel products on the market. But most seemed ineffective (based on reviews) or only available at salons or dermatologists.

Salon skin peel treatments are effective and offer a wide variety of types but knew I wouldn't be able to afford the treatment on an ongoing basis ($50 - $100 per peel).

I searched around and decided to buy a strong glycolic acid solution from a supplier and do the peel myself at home.  Although many recommendations were to go with a weaker strength (30% or lower), I wanted the same strength that spas use (70%).

It has good reviews and is priced at $14.99. Glycolic acid is reportedly good for both acne and wrinkles alike! Not a bad combination for a 40 something year old with both acne scars and fine lines!

I purchased my first 1 oz. bottle in November 2011 and it lasted for over a year.  It is very economical.  You only need a few drops per peel, especially if you use your finger to apply rather than a gauze pad.

I just followed the instructions in the packaging and left it on until I started seeing redness (for only a minute or so) then followed directions for rinsing.  An invaluable tip included in the instructions was to prepare a baking soda water solution to neutralize the acid once you are done with the peel.  It works and I was thankful to have it handy.  Each week I was able to leave the product on longer (up to 10 minutes).

You can see my application technique in this video - Be sure to subscribe to my YouTube channel!

I'll be filming additional videos for some of my most popular posts as well as new creative ideas to live well while saving money.

If you choose to treat your acne scarring or wrinkles with a glycolic acid peel you will want to follow the directions and be cautious until you know how your skin will react.  The time you should leave on will vary based on your skin type and sensitivity.

Please note, it is possible to blister your skin.  This isn't a  weak AHA lotion that you can buy in the drugstore.  I can't stress enough that this product is the real thing.  You will want to store it as you would any dangerous chemical, especially if you have children.

Just read the directions, use caution and common sense if you decide to do it yourself at home.  And don't forget to wear sunscreen! Done properly you can have a beautiful clear complexion AND save yourself a ton of money.

As with any medicine or cosmetic treatment, discontinue use and consult a physician if skin seems unreasonably irritated.  Should your skin flake (common with a peel) do not pick at your skin.  Doing so can cause scarring.

After care update ~ It has been some time since I began using the 70% peels and most of my scarring is completely gone. I found a great maintenance product that is inexpensive and also seems to prevent breakouts completely.

It is Alpha Hydrox Enhanced Lotion 10 percent Glycolic AHA -- 6 fl oz Anti-WrinkleIt costs around $10 a bottle and lasts me two months.  I use it once in the morning and once at night.  It's marketed as a wrinkle treatment but it works just as well for acne prevention and keeps my skin feeling soft and glowing!  I love it!  I have also bought the generic brand that is offered at Walgreens (about $9 a tub) and think that it does a nice job as well.

    1. Hi Miki,

I understand, the acne is bad enough but the scars it can leave are damaging. Just be very careful to follow the directions as this is a powerful chemical. We'd love to hear back from you when you've had a chance to use the peel a few times.

      Have a great weekend!

    3. Hi Vanessa,

I just saw your comments so I apologize for the delayed response! This peel has been reported to work very well in the reviews on Amazon. I would think that like any product, results may be different for each person. You can order the peel in multiple places however I placed a link in my post of the place that I purchased mine. It was very reasonably priced and I've ordered several times now. Each time I've been very happy with the speed of delivery and the results of the product. You could also consider spending the extra money and going to a dermatologist for the first peel just to see how your skin reacts if you are concerned.

Thank you for your comments. I'd love to hear how your first peel goes!

  2. I have done chemical peels at spas before and loved them but I cannot afford it to do it frequently. What I wanna know is it safe to do this at home? I understand that these chemicals are harmful if used wrong and am cautious of purchasing this product because of it. So did you feel this was a safe product to use for those who are familiar with chemical peels?

    1. Christina,

Absolutely! If you've had chemical peels at spas before then you are a perfect candidate for a do it yourself peel at home. Not only do you know what to expect, you've watched a professional at work! I've not had a peel at a spa before and am thrilled with the results. I just followed directions and have gotten great results. Please do share any tips that you think might help novices and let us know how your do it yourself experience goes! Thanks and have a great night!

  5. Probably the most troubling aspect of acne is that even after the over-sized pimples on your skin shrink down to size, you might be left with annoying bright red scarring.
These scars can remain on your skin for quite a long time unless you have an effective treatment system to aid in fading the scars away. This means you need to purchase the best acne scar treatment available on the market.

  15. I have done peels in the past but ofcourse didn't keep up because of the expense factor. I have acne scars that are pitted ..also known as ice pick scars. even though I don't get acne as much this scarring is something that I have a hard time dealing with on a daily basis. I would love to try this product but the only thing that petrifies me is that I have naturally darker skin because I am of East Indian origin. I am soo scared of have discoloration. Do you think I should start with 70%? And if so should I only keep it on for a couple of seconds? I am soo confused.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you are concerned about discoloration, I would perhaps start with a lower amount like 30%. This is not medical advice, just my opinion based on online research. I would start at a lower time and increase with each application. I have read as well that darker complexions can be discolored by skin peels.

  17. I will see if I can find some "before" pics but as many of you with acne know, I avoided close up photos and piled on the make up during my acne breakouts. Had I realized that I was going to share my beauty finds on my "home-making, do-it-yourself, and gardening blog" I would have taken some selfies up close and without makeup. I'll dig through and see if hubby captured any photos while I was unaware :)

As far as after pics, I think you can see my image in the right side bar. My skin is clear by this point with maybe one scar on my chin.

  20. Natural Acne Treatments isn't the name of solution which may be directly taken to eliminate the problem but it's something which can be achieved directly by the individual only. The combination associated with precautions and home dependent remedies is a total natural acne treatment by itself. The person has to do the task by them self only. For this all you need to know starting from the meals items which should end up being eaten, drinks which consists of essential nutrients and physical movements which says how the person needs to apply him also. Exercises will also be a kind of organic acne treatment.

  28. Does this peel layers off like chemical peels where you can't leave the house, or is it not so obvious? I want to try but I can't have my face falling off. I need to be able to wear make up the next day and not look scary 😊

    Replies
    1. I think it depends on how long you leave it on but this type of peel is often referred to as the lunchtime peel because you can get it without obvious peeling. I leave mine on until my skin starts to get slightly red then rinse off. I have never had chunks of skin fall off, rather a slight flaking over the next few days. Honestly, it has never peeled on me even as bad as a severe sunburn. But everyone's skin is different so yours may react differently. I would suggest trying a minute for the first application, then work your way up to longer periods once you know how your skin behaves. Hope this helps!

P.S, I think the peels that cause your "face to fall off" are TCA peels or other chemicals, not glycolic acid.

    1. Dear Anonymous,

In my experience this does help with active acne but I will warn you that the acne spots (especially if you have picked at them) will sting a little more than the other areas of the skin. One product that has helped me prevent future breakouts (I've been several years acne free now - And I do mean Acne FREE) is the milder Alpha-Hydrox Lotion. I use this daily and do a 70% or 50% glycolic acid peel once a month. You can use the Alpha-Hydrox Lotion (see link in post to see the product I'm referring to) twice daily. It has a much milder concentration of the glycolic acid. Of course I still take turmeric daily to help prevent breakouts from the inside. I mix it in with my smoothie every morning as it is good for all sorts of things.

If you are afraid of the stinging, you could start with the Alpha-Hydrox. Use it daily for several weeks then apply the stronger peel to begin the process of removing the scars. The instructions will tell you to not use any products containing glycolic acid (for example the Alpha Hydrox Lotion) for 24 hours following the stronger peel.

I've found that this regimen works for me. And the added bonus is that my skin has almost no lines or wrinkles. I'm now 45 years old and am told that I look much younger. I truly believe that using glycolic acid products on a regular basis has helped my skin to look younger. The best part to me is that I haven't had to invest tons of money in expensive creams that may or may not work. The results are noticeable and the price is CHEAP!

  31. So you start with 30% ? How often is it done with the 30% ? How long does it take to work up to 70% ? Do you go up from 30% to 40% to 50% and so on? So many questions sorry!
    but thank you!!!

    1. You bring up some really good questions, Anonymous. I actually started at the 70% and had great success by leaving it on for a short amount of time on the first application (about a minute or so) then gradually increased the amount of time I left it on with each application. Eventually I left the glycolic acid on for 10 minutes. Since then, I purchased a 50% strength and still do a maintenance peel monthly. I use Alpha Hydrox Lotion (contains a much lower dose of glycolic acid) daily. I think that you could start with a 30% and work your way up to a stronger concentration if you have sensitive skin or darker skin. I've read that peels can cause discoloration with darker skin. As for me, I just paid attention and neutralized the areas (with a baking soda and water solution) that began to get red. I did not blister or even get as red as a sunburn. As with any product, follow directions and discontinue use if you have irritation beyond the expected peeling. If the irritation persists, consult a physician.

I have had several readers request that I make a tutorial on the application of the glycolic acid peel. I am planning doing so in the next few weeks so stay tuned!

  33. There's a reason that these things are for the professionals who've had extensive training. By doing this yourself you're probably doing more harm to your skin than good. 70% is a ridiculous amount first off that many medical spas aren't even allowed to use and second off the fact that you're buying it offline most likely means that its already expired or not even what it says it is. I understand that you want your skin to look better but doing at-home-medical-grade peels is not the way to go and by advising others to do so too without knowing proper precautions is terrible. Go see you're local esthetician for help!!!

    1. I appreciate your input, Anonymous. You bring up a valid point. Some people shouldn't attempt an "at home peel". There are some peels that I would never attempt at home, such as a TCA peel, even though you can purchase the product online.

But applying a glycolic peel at home isn't rocket science. If you have even half a brain, follow the directions and can pay attention to your own skin by visually observing and feeling pain signals, then you are capable of doing a glycolic acid peel at home.

I disagree that products are expired or "not even what it says it is" just because you can buy them online. My personal experience with glycolic acid purchases have been very good (not expired AND very effective). I simply am sharing my personal experience to let readers know how I got rid of my acne scarring and saved a ton of money doing so.

I would like to learn more about your perspective. Have you had a peel before? Either at a spa or at home? Are you a trained professional? What training is required for a spa to administer a peel? Why do you assume that the glycolic acid peel is "not even what it says it is"? Have you purchased a peel product and been disappointed?

As always, I do advise our readers to take proper precautions, to follow directions and of course to consult a physician should they experience unusual irritation.

There are many products and services that "trained professionals" offer but this does not mean that the average consumer shouldn't attempt them at home.

Our readers are smart, sophisticated and capable. They come to our site, often to learn how to do something better at a cheaper price. I can say from personal experience that the glycolic acid peel fits the bill.

Thank you again for your input! Have a great week!

    2. Completely agree! Not to mention that overuse of glycolic acid actually can cause glycation and mitosis. After everyone messes up their skin they'll be paying even more to fix it

      Delete
    3. I am confused, Anonymous. I have yet to find a connection between glycation and use or overuse of glycolic acid. Please do let our readers know your source of information. And my understanding is that mitosis is actually a good thing. Mitosis is a process where a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells (cell division). The major purpose of mitosis is for growth and to replace worn out cells. Last I checked that is exactly what the typical glycolic acid consumer is looking for! Thanks for your input and have a wonderful weekend :)

    1. Hi Erin,

I do not have overly sensitive skin however I have a fair complexion and do sunburn easily. My advice would be to go to a salon for your first peel if you are uneasy about doing it yourself. If you choose to do it yourself, leave it on for a very short time (30 seconds to 1 minute) and see how you tolerate the peel. If you begin to blister immediately or experience extreme pain, rinse right away. I think having a bowl of baking soda water or a commercially prepared neutralizing solution handy would be smart as well.

  41. First off this is the very first time I have ever wanted or felt compelled to write a personal review becuase of the success of a product I have tried (so I will apologize now for the length of post). Because I get too well how frustrating the whole process of trying something new, over and over again, and it not working.

I must say I have searched and tried way too many things, including expensive treatements for both acne and the resulting scars and discoloration on my skin. It's never a fun process to realize something isn't going to be effective or that it's effective yet way too expensive to be feasible. Personally I feel I have had more acne as an adult than ever as a kid and no dermatologist has been able to effectively treat it. I sort of gave up, over and over again. Added to that I have experienced increased discoloration from both scarring and hormones. I have tried IPL Lazer treatments and even though they helped I couldn't afford to keep up with them as the discoloration would always return. I have tried spa glycolic peels as well with effective results, but also couldn't afford to maintain. I also tried microdermabrasion with minimal results.

That's why I was very happy to come across this post linked in pinterest. I was a bit leary (ok very leary) of trying a peel on my own but figured after reading the many very positive reviews on the link poppyjuice provided, what was there to lose!! So after 3 weeks if procrastinating and rereading the reviews many times I finally ordered the peel and some of the Alpha Hydrox brand lotion and toner which both contain glycolic acid. I also made some additions that I posted about below. So fast forward a month and I have been giving myself a weekly peel for the past 4 weeks and have seen drastically great results. I plan to now start to space the peels out more. I almost don't want to jynx it by talking about it yet, honestly I debated this. At the same time I odered what was recommended (glycolic peel), I also ordered some additional items from the same amazon vendor including their inexpensive (the same company as the glycolic peel, "Skin Beauty Solutions" (and no I don't work for them nor did I know anyhting about them till seeing this original post) 100 % Hyaluronic moisterizing gel/serum ($19.99) http://www.amazon.com/Pure-100%25-HYALURONIC-Acid-Moisturizing/dp/B006HWFUFU/ref=sr_1_12_a_it?srs=2600653011&ie=UTF8&qid=1460070706&sr=8-12&keywords=Hyaluronic
Not sure if I posted the link correctly. The reviews were really positive for this product and it's so reasonably priced as compared to all the trendy new expensive anti aging products. I use it every night and morning, and especially right after the peel. I also have been using the Alpha Hydrox brand glycolic toner which I found the best price at dermstore.Com with a 20% off promo code. I did buy the Alpha Hydrox lotion that was recommended by poppyjuice but I haven't started it yet since I didn't want to add too many new products at once and she had noted she used it more for eventual maintainance, so I will incorporate it soon.

    1. Thank you for all of the great info. I'm getting a little confused though trying to figure out your products used compared to the original post. Would you please share your beginning routine? Thank you!

  42. Ok my post really was too long!!...so part two:
Additionally after 3 weeks of the combination of the 70% glycolic peel and hyaluronic gel/serum I added their Vitamin C serum every night ($18.99)
    (2 oz) VITAMIN -C 25% Anti-Oxidant Skin Face Serum - Organic (L-Ascorbic Acid...
This also got rave reviews online and I must say it made a huge difference to the discoloration almost immediately. I found both of these additional products just by researching them from the amazon site and reading the reviews which all were stellar. The only other thing I have done was start taking the vitamin Tumeric which poppyjuice recommended to help with active acne.

Final note (I swear) I have always used a high level sunscreen to try to prevent any additional intensification of the discoloration and I would really recommend to do so in conjunction with the glycolic peel. I have used Skinceuticals Sheer Physical UV Defense matte spf 50 but it's kind a pricey (Loreal now has a tinted knockoff spf 50 which I am trying now and its pretty good) or Physicians Formula CC with spf 30.

My over all hope is to have my acne gone, along with the scars, so I no longer have to wear makeup to cover everything up or feel self conscience about my skin. Not to jynx it but it seems to all be going too smoothly. I can't believe the difference in such a short time in the improvement in discoloration, acne, pores, and overall health, quality, appearance and smoothness. I know others have asked if the peel helps with active acne and I feel it does because each time I have used peel I have had at least 3-4 pimples and it has quickened their healing each time. Plus it seems to have prevented future breakouts. Crazy, I know right?! Now I only hope beyond reason that it continues (that I haven't jynxed myself) and wish that I could have known this info 15-20 years ago!!

Oh thank you, thank you, thank you poppyjuice for posting your experience and valuable information!!

Why not add more reason for people to stare at my face ( WRINKLES AND ACNE!) it's been really bad on the bridge and tip of my nose and some times it spreads across my cheek bones. I have tried every thing even prescription creams. Inky thing any of that stuff has done is add extremely flaky dry skin along with acne. I have been noticing that before the acne surfaces I will have several layers of dry skin on top of the acne. So it's like the dry skin, dead skin or old skin is blocking the poors. I keep thinking if there was a way to scrub off the layers of old skin to where the fresh younger new skin is then maybe this issue would cure itself. I had read 2 other pins on Pinterest where these 2 other ladies had done chemical peels for acne and they had wonderful results also. I am going to give his a try. What do I have to loose ither then a bunch of old dead skin lol. When I was much younger and my mom was my age I am now I remember her trying every thing under the sun on her face to try and get rid of wrinkles. I use to make fun and pick on her about it. Hmm what they say is def true, if you pick on some one it comes back on you lol. Thanks again for sharing this and the cost is absolutely fabulous I can actually fit that in my budget !
